The Hatchets defeated league rival Harbor Beach 2-1 in the opening round. In a game where the wind played a huge role with gusts of nearly 30 mph, Spencer Britt and Nick Errer did the scoring for the Hatchets.

In the district semifinals, Bad Axe took on the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers in another game against a conference foe. The Lakers had defeated Saginaw Arts and Science Academy 7-1.

The Hatchets jumped out to an early lead on the first of two goals scored by foreign exchange student Juan Castrillon, who is from Columbia. Nick Errer and Cordell Prich each added goals in the 4-0 shutout of the Lakers.

The Hatchets advanced to the finals to take on Valley Lutheran, whose path to the finals included wins over Marlette (5-0) and Saginaw Nouvel (2-1). Once again, the weather reared its ugly head and Saturday’s championship had to be postponed and played on Sunday afternoon.

Valley Lutheran scored first, but a goal by Liam Boyle tied the game. However, Valley Lutheran wasted no time in taking the lead right back.

In the second half, Bradley Howard scored for the Hatchets evening the score at 2. Kevin Doerr scored the winning goal late in the half off a rebound of a Juan Castrillon shot. He then assured the victory with a penalty kick goal moments later.

This is the fifth district championship title for the Bad Axe Boys soccer program, and the first for head coach Adam Sutherland.
