“We knew coming over here that it was going to be a battle,” said Harbor Beach head coach Jim Tamlyn. “I’m so proud of our young kids, I had a couple of sophomores out there at the same time. Both teams played extremely hard. What a great game on a Friday night in the thumb. Just a great high school game.”

The game started out slow as the first basket wasn’t scored until almost three minutes into the first quarter.

After the first basket was made, Harbor Beach took off, outscoring USA 32-20 in the first half.

Lexi Rutkowski scored 14 of her 17 first half points in the first quarter, and finished the game with 26 points.

“Shes worked so hard, and she’s working to get stronger,” said Tamlyn. “To be able to play the way she played, all night long is impressive.”

In the third quarter however, USA made a comeback, outscoring the Pirates, 20-8, tying the game at 40.

Lauren Adam and Rylee Zimmer led the USA comeback, as they scored nine points each in the third quarter.

“We didn’t make a whole lot of adjustments, we simply got our heads in the game, and played like we wanted to win,” said USA head coach Bryce Frahm of his team second half improvement, “In the first half we left a lot of points on the floor, by not catching the ball, not making layups, not being tough inside. In the second half we had the mindset that we want to compete, we want to finish, we want to score, and we got tough.”

The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter, and late in the final frame, USA tied the game at 51-51.

Adam fouled out with 3:08 left in the game however, and Harbor Beach took control defensively, and Jessica Weber had the go-ahead put back with just under a minute to go.

Rutkowski lead all scorers with 26 points, while Mae Woodke added 10 for the Pirates.

Adam had 16 points and three steals for the Patriots, and Rylee Zimmer led USA with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
