Fat Guy’s Corner

Bowling season is too long

Jeff Day — Sports Columnist Jeff Day — Sports Columnist The college football bowl season is here fa la la la la. Go back and sing it; it will put you in the holiday spirit. It’s time for too many bowl games and .500 football teams being rewarded for 6-6 seasons. I guess if you’re an average football team you receive a bowl game bid. I mean, if Georgia State and Western Kentucky don’t get you fired up, what possibly can during bowl season?

I love football, but the bowl season is total overkill. The college football bowl season needs to lose about 10 to 15 of these worthless games. The bowl madness starts on December 16 with five games scheduled. The Michigan State Spartans are heading to the Holiday Bowl to play the Pac 12 foe, Washington State. The date is December 28 and kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. The Spartans should be playing on New Year’s Day, if you ask me. I do love this match up, though, as I think this is a very good football game on paper. I think both are evenly matched and Las Vegas has installed the Washington State Cougars as three-point favorites.

The Michigan Wolverines do not deserve to play on New Year’s Day against the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Outback Bowl. Why they were chosen over Sparty is beyond me! I think it is a slap in the face to the Spartans, personally. The Spartans have the last laugh having defeated the Wolverines this season. The boys from Las Vegas have installed Michigan as an eight-point favorite. The New Year’s Day kickoff of the Outback Bowl is at high noon.

Central Michigan will take on Wyoming on December 22 at 4:p.m. The Western Michigan football team was snubbed even though it was bowl eligible.

Playoff committee got it right

The college football playoff committee decided to bypass Ohio State for Alabama and I feel as though they got this right. I don’t think a one-loss team in Alabama should be out over a two-loss Ohio State team that let Iowa hang 55 points on it. What we have then is No. 1 Clemson playing Bama at 8:45 p.m. on January 1. The Crimson Tide are favored by two points over Clemson.

The other playoff game has

Georgia and Oklahoma hooking up in the other contest. The boys of Vegas has put a pick-the-winner odds on this one. I would say that is as even as it gets on the football field. I will give my selections and winners in a few weeks.

Lions need a new coach

The Detroit Lions should not have let coach Jim Caldwell board the plane in Baltimore. I would have fired his sorry Lions Tail as soon as he reached the locker room. The effort was pitiful and the players have mailed it in effort-wise. I am done with the Lions talk until I can rationally speak about them. They are not worth any of my time, or ink. The Fat Guy is out on the Detroit Lions. I am officially mailing in my desire to follow them. I could really go into a profanity-laced tirade here, but it’s a family paper. I wish I could go uncensored just once.

Frayed nerves

The Detroit Red Wings are getting on my last nerve, also. How can Jeff Blashill still have his job? A 10-1 beating by the Montreal Habs should have been enough.

I am digging the Detroit Pistons this season, though. They are a solid NBA basketball team. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
