September milk production up in Michigan

LANSING - Dairy herds in Michigan produced 910 million pounds of milk during September, up 3.4 percent from a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Great Lakes Region.

The daily rate per cow was 70.8 pounds, up 1.3 pounds from September 2016.

The dairy herd was estimated at 428,000 head for September, up 6,000 head from a year earlier. The average price of milk sold in September by Michigan dairy producers was $16.50 per cwt., $0.30 more than the price in September 2016.
