Chicken egg, turkey poults production up in Michigan

LANSING - All layers in Michigan totaled 14 million during September, up 5 percent from a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Great Lakes Region.

Egg production totaled 346 million eggs, up 11 percent from last year. The rate of lay during September was 2,463 eggs per 100 layers. On Oct. 1 in the East North Central Region, which includes Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin, there were 5.9 million egg-type eggs in incubators, down 10 percent from a year earlier. In the same region, there were 15.9 million broiler-type eggs in incubators, up 12 percent from the previous year. There were 23.7 million turkey poults hatched in the United States in September, slightly above the previous year.
